Domain Names
".com.au" DOMAIN NAMES FROM ONLY $29 / YEAR
A Domain name is essentially your website address on the internet (e.g. "www.ripplepoint.com.au"). In Australia, a government body (The auDA) is in place to regulate and manage all domains that end with .au (e.g. .com.au, .net.au, .gov.au, etc websites). Because the domain names need to be recorded and managed by the auDA (and their agents), a fee is charged for the use of each domain name (usually a relatively small annual fee of somewhere between $13 and $50). The auDA does not deal directly with the public, but has instead approved a number of agents to sell (and transfer) domains names on their behalf. Similar arrangements are in place for most other countries around the world. You'll find that the Australian agents you buy your .au domain names from, will often have arrangements with regulatory bodies in other countries that enables them to sell you more than just .au domain names (e.g. you can also buy .com, .co.uk, .co.nz, etc domains from them as well). There are rules about who can buy some types of names 
(e.g. to own a .com.au or .net.au domain name you must be an Australian registered company, or business with a registered business number (ABN, BRN, BN). You will also need to identify a reasonable link between the domain name and your business e.g. a similar name to your business name, a product or service, a venue or event that you run, etc).
The best way to find out whether the domain name you need is available is to search the domain name database. It only takes a couple of seconds , and it will be able to tell you if the name you want is available for purchase, or if it has already been purchased by someone else. If it's available, you can apply to purchase it right now. For most people, if the name is already taken they will just keep searching for the next best option. However, if you are really determined to get a name that has already been taken, you can use information in the domain name database to track down the registered owner, and maybe they'll be willing to sell it to you.
